Matthias Steier

* 1959

MATTHIAS STEIER (*1959) studied at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig under Dietrich Burger, Wolfgang Peuker, and Arno Rink. In 1983, Steier earned his diploma as a painter and contributed to the monumental painting by Werner Tübke in Bad Frankenhausen from 1983 to 1985. Since 1987, he has been living and working as a freelance artist in Eisenhüttenstadt and has participated in numerous exhibitions in Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, and Belgium.

Matthias Steier theatrically brings his artistic visions to life. In barren stage-like settings, the artist places humans and animals alike. They are equal protagonists, even though their relationship to one another remains uncertain. This uncertainty creates the narrative tension in his paintings. Furthermore, Matthias Steier combines seemingly incompatible elements within each scene—a rubber dinghy in a stark landscape, a cat lounging in the midday sun on a mini-golf course, a wrecked car escorted by two riders in traditional Spanish attire. Often, the works reveal a subtle humor that elicits a smile from the viewer as they engage with the art.
