Michael Karlovski
The bronze sculptures of Göbel student MICHAEL KARLOVSKI (*1968) are rooted in the tradition of the Halle School of Sculpture. The Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle has a lasting influence on sculptors, emphasizing precise studies of nature as the foundation of artistic practice. Furthermore, the education promotes the integration of content and form into a cohesive artistic statement. Simplification in figuration serves as a means to this end.
The graceful sculptures of Michael Karlovski exude an archaic quality through their reduction and evoke a sense of calm, particularly due to their static composition. They invite contemplation. In his work, the artist reflects on themes from the creation story while also questioning the relevance of other classical topics in art history, such as equestrian statues and the motif of the Harlequin. The artist's works gain particular strength when they avoid idealization. In the sculpture "Alter Engel," for instance, the spiritual being is depicted with the everyday features and weary form of a frail old man.
