Francois Joseph Chabrillat
Francois Joseph Chabrillat (*1960, Clermont-Ferrand,
France) studied from 1978 until 1984 at the École des
Beaux-Arts in Clermont-Ferrand. For his conceptual works,
Chabrillat uses a technique related to monotypes called
cardboard cut. He gathers installation photographs or
images of contemporary art from catalogues, as well as
motives drawn from the Internet and treats them like
“installation photographs.” Chabrillat’s selection of images is
dependent upon the photographer’s vantage point vis-à-vis
the exhibition and the color of the images represented.
Based on these photographs, he prints planes and
structures – compositions alluding to space. He then
interlocks added texts and quotes with geometry and
ornaments, thereby transforming the exhibited image into
an illustration.
