- Devin Miles Emphasizes Innovative Accents

In recent years, Devin Miles has made a name for himself in the international art scene. As a rising star, he was discovered by the art market two years ago. He has fully lived up to those expectations so far. Despite the financial crisis and economic downturn, Devin Miles has achieved significant success.

With appealing motifs, dynamic brushwork, complex forms of representation, and a refined artistic technique, he has revitalized the art scene.

In addition to his photorealistic unique pieces, it is primarily the screen printing technique that plays a central role in his work. Screen printing was revolutionized in the 1960s by Pop Art artists. Artistically, Devin Miles sees himself in their tradition. For Miles, Pop Art is a movement that will always remain "up-to-date." It has endured through time just like the myths of the stars to whose fame this popular art movement contributed. Romy Schneider, James Dean, and especially Marilyn Monroe are the icons of that era that we still admire today.

In the realm of printmaking innovation, Devin Miles has developed groundbreaking possibilities. He prints on hand-brushed aluminum plates. This material significantly contributes to the stunning effect of the motifs. From every angle and especially in changing light, the works appear different, continually creating new accents. Fine reflections energize the surfaces. Another essential factor that determines the depth effect of Miles' works is the multitude of screens used in a single piece. Fourteen screens or more create a nuanced impression and ensure the corresponding complexity.

Devin Miles combines the sophisticated and delicate screen printing process with free painting.

The excellent technical execution is a prerequisite for the artist's success, while the innovative impact is another. Devin Miles does not simply adapt Pop Art; he evolves it and brings it to a new level. This is appreciated equally by the art market and gallery owners. In Denmark, he is successfully represented nationwide through specialized dealers. In the USA, he has established galleries not only in New York and Malibu but also in several centers in Florida.

What sets Miles' works apart from the images previously categorized under the term Pop Art? Devin Miles delves deeper. This is largely due to the principle of collage, which forms the basis of most of his images. In the artist's Berlin studio, complex images emerge where very different elements converge.

The statement arises from the context created by the seemingly arbitrary juxtaposition and overlap of images and texts. This is particularly evident in the work "Monroe Affair," 150 x 100 cm, edition of 19 pieces. At the center is, of course, the radiant singer and actress, who is unjustly identified with her clichéd roles.

Through the connecting lines that Miles collages into his works with references to the "White House" and John F. Kennedy, aspects are emphasized that lend urgency to the story of Monroe and her mysterious death.

This urgency is further underscored by the use of texts. Miles enjoys incorporating fitting fonts into his images. This serves not only compositional but also content-related purposes. These elements are essential mosaic pieces for the artist, which he combines into increasingly complex visions throughout the production process. Thus, the tabloid-like headlines alongside the stark official death certificate of Marilyn Monroe highlight the documentary urgency that the artist references here.

In this way, contributions to the art of our time emerge daily from new ideas and inspirations.

Everyday myths, stars and starlets, and Hollywood western heroes celebrate a joyful gathering in these works.

In other pieces, the artist takes us on a journey through the metropolises of the world.

Two years ago, Miles presented his large work "Berlin-Berlins" to the governing mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit. Prominent buildings of the German capital, such as the Berlin Cathedral and the Brandenburg Gate, define the atmosphere here. Additionally, there is the inscription, which proclaims in German and in the languages of the four victorious powers of World War II: "You are leaving the American sector."

This inscription was displayed at "Checkpoint Charlie" until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and thus documents a piece of history that was significant not only for the old and new German capital but for all of Europe. In Devin Miles' works, the history of the city is not only present through its architectural history but particularly in such life-defining documents that he meticulously incorporates into his images. Such signs are worth noting. They frequently appear in the works of Devin Miles and point to the meaning of the representation that needs to be deciphered.
