Akiyoshi Mishima
Akiyoshi Mishima views the sculptures in the exhibition "Shogon" as tools for painting, just as he understands color and print as forms of painting itself. The small sculptures, which the artist arranges in wooden boxes in front of the C-prints, are made of clay and layered with spray paint and brushed finishes. In terms of form, size, and materiality, Akiyoshi Mishima aesthetically references traditional Japanese art, which contextualizes the concepts of "sublimity" and "randomness." In Japan, there are numerous ceramic works available for sale at temples that promise luck, success, or wealth.
Shogon is a term borrowed from Buddhism that describes the decoration of Buddhist sculptures located at temple sites. The purpose of this decoration is to emphasize the majesty of the sculptures.
