Pure Pop Art III @ 30works
Pure Pop Art III @ 30works
Group exhibition featuring John Breed, François Coorens, Jörg Döring, and Van Ray
Catchy and appealing? Yes. Unambitious and thoughtless? Not at all. Pop Art has always been and continues to be part of a discourse that holds a mirror to society, its self-perception and representation, as well as its value system. Gérard Margaritis provides a broad platform for young Pop Art in his gallery 30works. For the third edition of his "Pure Pop Art" exhibition, he has brought together John Breed, François Coorens, Jörg Döring, and Van Ray, who explore the genre in all its facets, thereby significantly expanding its scope.
John Breed presents oversized, multicolored, and mirrored banknotes, transforming them into ironic decorative objects and completely undermining their status as symbols of value and drivers of our world. In doing so, he makes his own contribution to the critique of turbo-capitalism.
Belgian artist François Coorens demonstrates with his powerful images, teeming with references and codes specific to Pop Art, that he is a master at taming chaotic conditions. Thus, Pop Art possesses a cathartic potential.
Jörg Döring reveals himself as a master of free-spirited play with textures and techniques. He presents Pop Art that, thanks to its rich material and thematic language, establishes a lasting, emotionally charged dialogue with the viewer.
Van Ray's collages and stencils take on an explicitly social-critical tone: sometimes subtly ironic, sometimes deliberately sardonic, he employs well-known advertising slogans, song titles, and proverbs, which in the context of the images serve as an explicit outcry against social injustices, consumer madness, and political shortcomings.
