Rare gouaches, monotypes, and woodcuts by K. O. Götz from the 1940s exemplify the highly interesting surreal phase of his work, from which he later developed his more renowned oeuvre. Consequently, Prof. K. O. Götz is recognized as one of the main representatives of German Informel and became a teacher to artists such as Gerhard Richter, Gotthard Graubner, and Sigmar Polke. K. O. Götz shared a lifelong friendship with Heinrich Kühl—his first gallerist from 1940 to 1949—and his son, painter and successor Johannes Kühl, due to their shared artistic and political beliefs. While Heinrich Kühl sold his works, K. O. Götz acquired "forbidden art" from Feininger, Chagall, Schwitters, Kandinsky, Moholy-Nagy, Schlemmer, German Expressionists, and Jugendstil in return. Through Heinrich Kühl, K. O. Götz met art historian Will Grohmann and marginalized painters and photographers like Otto Dix, Wilhelm Lachnit, Edmund Kesting, and their circles.

Monotype plays an important role in the post-war period, as artists sought new means of expression, and it continues to be used today. The featured artists create distinctive signatures and unique pieces using their own methods.
