Raïssa Venables

Raïssa Venables was born in 1977 in New Paltz, NY. She studied photography and media arts at the Kansas City Art Institute until 1999 and completed her Master’s in Photography at the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College in 2002. The artist has diligently developed a distinctive visual language. Her intricate collages transform specific interiors such as churches, staircases, or RVs into optical illusions with both subtlety and determination. The stories of the creators and users of these spaces come to life in a way that confuses, chills, and entertains.

The successes of this innovative perspective have already begun to manifest. The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program awarded Venables scholarships, while the Jersey City Museum, the Roswell Art Museum, and several German art associations dedicated solo exhibitions to her work. In the groundbreaking Städel exhibition of contemporary photography from the DZ-Bank collection in the summer of 2008, her work played a prominent role.

Raïssa Venables lives in Pleasantville, NY, and teaches photography at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.
