Pit Morell

* 1939

Morell was born in Kassel in 1939. Due to the destruction of the city in 1943 during World War II, he stayed with his aunt in Reinhardswald until the end of the war. A year later, he moved to Hohenkirchen.

In 1951, Morell relocated to Sielen and Hümme (HUMI), where he received drawing lessons from teacher Hinze and inspiration from the painter and sculptor Wilhelm Hugues. From 1954 to 1957, Pit Morell completed a commercial apprenticeship in Kassel. Starting in 1958, he began studying graphic design at the State School of Art and Design in Kassel under Prof. Hüffner. That same year, he traveled to Paris by bicycle. The following two years were spent in Munich and Kassel, where he married Rosmarie Ellerlage.

From 1960 to 1963, he lived in Bremen, where he wrote the poetry collection "Tschikeung." After moving to Worpswede in 1964, he created drawings and etchings from 1965 to 1970. In 1965, Morell also held his first exhibition of colored pencil drawings at Sydow/Frankfurt and Brockstedt/Hamburg. Additionally, he invented his own land called "HUMI," which he illustrated. In 1966, he published another poetry collection titled "Signale."

In 1967, Morell received the Art Prize from Bremen and Lower Saxony. His solo exhibitions included venues such as the Kunsthalle Bremen, the Lower Saxony State Museum for Art and Cultural History in Oldenburg, and the Kunstverein in Wiesbaden. The following year, Pit Morell was awarded a scholarship from the Aldegrever Society in Münster as well as the Art Prize from the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. In 1969, he was honored with the Lower Saxony Art Prize for Visual Arts.

In 1977, he participated in documenta 6 in the section for drawings in Kassel. A stay in Paris followed in 1982, made possible by a scholarship from the state of Lower Saxony. In 1986, Morell received a teaching position at the University of Fine Arts in Bremen. In 1995, he was awarded the Art and Culture Prize of the Osterholz district.
