Isabelle Copet

Since the beginning of her artistic career, Isabelle Copet has been fascinated by states of suspension and flow. For the project "Digital Off Shore," for example, she created elegant white sails that she placed on the water's surface. Her almost immaterial forms, composed of countless empty spaces, generated subtle motifs projected onto the waterbed by the sun.

To realize these floating forms, she now uses 2 mm thick rubber, a material that is lightweight and soft despite its toughness, which she pierces piece by piece following the patterns of lace embroidery. The creation of intricate embroideries is a deeply rooted craft tradition in Belgium dating back to the 15th century. Copet appropriates this tradition using contemporary means, thus creating an artistic interface between the past and the present.

Her perforated rubber/latex material, which also carries a certain delicacy, has now been translated into various dimensions. In a vertical orientation to the ground, for instance, it appears as a Moucharabié, making the world perceptible only as something translucent.

For her project "Diagrams," the patterns are now transferred onto the sides of a cube, into which finely crafted details are punctured. The cube appears solid yet transparent, airy and floating. However, the motifs here no longer stem from Belgian embroideries but from the ornaments of the Cologne Cathedral. Once again, contemporary art merges with cultural heritage. Light plays a crucial role in the work, casting long shadows that reveal the graphic and precise details of the piece. On the ground, the motifs of the original cube are reflected in a repetitive and somewhat scattered manner. A poetic moment of silence and suspension.

Isabelle Copet lives and works in Brussels, Belgium.
