Rüdiger Mönnikes - C10H22
The team at [galerie.bruehl] warmly invites you to the upcoming exhibition opening titled
C10H22 featuring works by Rüdiger Mönnikes
on Sunday, November 6, 2011, at 3:00 PM at [galerie.bruehl], Uhlstraße 2, 50321 Brühl.
About the exhibition:
At first glance, the paintings and objects of Cologne-based artist Rüdiger Mönnikes appear cool, strict, orderly, and sometimes even austere, perhaps calculated. They are what they are, without transcending their own existence. Superficially meditative and calm, they seem to generate peculiar new fields of tension upon closer inspection. Mönnikes' artistic toolkit appears simple. He employs the vocabulary of geometry, the "window to the universe" revered by physicists, using circles, ovals, lines, squares, rectangles, and ellipses. These elemental forms, which surround us daily as principles of architecture and design, are arranged by Mönnikes into complex compositions. He draws lines that can be traced concretely yet seem to pull into the imaginary. He organizes and systematizes, opens fields, creates structures and intersections, and suggests connections. An additional layer of tension is added to the works through the encounter of aspects of reverse glass painting with contemporary materials such as luminous acrylic and Plexiglas. From these friction points of line and structure, surface and color, arise visual constructs that constantly oscillate between tension and release.
