Artist books as an independent artistic medium represent a relatively young but incredibly versatile genre in the visual arts. Whether as unique pieces or in small editions, they are created from a variety of materials and artistic techniques. New structural relationships and interpretations challenge the traditional form and function of the book. Some works in the exhibition reflect a playful engagement with spatial or temporal possibilities, while others explore the boundaries of the book as a medium. To experience the complexity of the primarily showcased pieces in vitrines, visitors can handle them during the "Leafing Evenings."
Tina Flau creates poetic spaces from her artist books. She responds to various themes with appropriately designed means. For instance, the "Water Book" is cut from colored plastic, while "Night of Coal" is drawn on deep black glossy paper.
Henning Kappenberg takes up the form of a diary with "The first born is dead." This chronological collection of images, data, and facts processes the gap between personal experience and public reporting during the first Gulf War. In "Mogadishu," the hijacking of the Lufthansa plane "Landshut" in 1977 is artistically translated through a sequence of photographed documentary film images.
Max Marek's artist books, created using paper cutting techniques, provide insights into the interior of the human body. Each page is a microcosm in itself, and as the viewer turns the pages, they delve deeper into these worlds. With a cutter and scalpel, a mirror of humanity in our time is revealed through many individual snapshots.
Christoph Mauler artistically engages with product packaging and its reproduction in print media. He confronts the linearity inherent in book form with the simultaneity of gesture. What is sequential and what is simultaneous are not opposed here. Instead, a woven structure emerges that occurs with the gesture of the depicted subject and the gesture of representation.
Undine Weyers reinterprets books in the form of crocheted objects—both as what they are and what they could be. The new contours of the unusual material highlight the shape of the object while questioning its actual significance.
beate maria wörz explores the origins and meanings of books, writing, and censorship in personal and societal life through a multipart work. She combines drawn "linear life paths" with current press reports and distorts letters into unreadable signs that elude the viewer on a cognitive level.
