Frank Seidel: Liebe Tod Wetter - Malerei
Opening on: June 21
A catalog will be published for the exhibition. Speaker: Dr. Fritz Jacobi
The visual worlds of Frank Seidel, a sculptor and painter born in Berlin in 1959, are populated by demons, spirits, and monsters. Only upon a closer look does it become clear: the beings depicted here are humans, distorted bodies that are not foreign, but belong to this world. They represent inner views of human states of being, which Frank Seidel, a specialist in human loneliness and wounds, brings to light—these are not imaginary creatures or otherworldly beings.
Since the early 1980s, the artist, initially primarily a sculptor and later also a painter, has consistently cast his unflinching yet never disdainful gaze on the transitional states of the human psyche, tearing apart, nesting, twisting, distorting, and bending, ultimately achieving a clarity of vision reminiscent of Francis Bacon or Kafka.
Although Frank Seidel's works are driven by an eminently quirky, underlying imagination, they never lose their sensual connection to a tangible reality. His sharp, dramatic visual constellations present both a challenge and a reinforcement for the viewer, demanding a stance.
Self-taught, Frank Seidel has been working as a freelance sculptor and painter in Berlin since 1984. He had his first solo exhibition at the National Gallery in Berlin in 1991 and has been the recipient of numerous awards and competitions. His works are part of collections including the Neue Nationalgalerie, the collection of the German Bundestag, and the Deutsche Bank collection.
