bikini

The exhibition title "bikini" – a lot of skin and a minimal covering – is to be understood as a cheeky, provocative analogy to non-figurative art. The exhibition features works from the fields of painting and sculpture that derive their definition and appeal from reduced and therefore exciting details. Through the deliberately pointed design of the captivatingly large artworks, the "skin" of the canvas, the color space, and the spatial body of the sculpture become joyfully tangible.

Michael Bause analyzes and filters the seductive color tones and structures from illustrations to ultimately transpose them into his pictorial world. Creatively assembled, one finds a seemingly effortlessly poured yet complex pool of color combined with transparent ovals, creating a new painterly reality. In the viewer's eye, a tension-filled, jelly-like movement emerges, and the suggestive power of color becomes palpable.

Laurence Grave highlights the specific and subtle intensity of "uncolored" hues in her paintings. With sensitivity, she creates vibrant contrasts using closely related color tones. On predominantly monochromatic backgrounds, she allows "figures," as she calls her free forms, to emerge with just a few brushstrokes. The ambivalent tension between a color field that could be figurative and the purely abstract color space makes the "figure" appear in heightened solitude and silence.

Detlef Mallwitz develops in his work principles and pathways that artistically bring laws to "life." Born from a joy of exploration, the exhibited sculptures arise through sequences of cuts and labyrinthine transpositions. Following his conceptual model, he seeks to unite opposites within a common cycle and to balance equilibrium through movement. In his steel sculptures, he distills the essence of his thoughts to their core, creating vast space with reduced means.
