Art is ubiquitous, manifesting in various forms and defying any strict definition. Many visitors to contemporary art exhibitions often feel overwhelmed when trying to assess the quality of the works on display, understand their artistic nature, and derive value from the exhibits. The K-Salon aims to address this very question in its exhibition series "On the Value of the Artwork": How do we actually form judgments about art? What constitutes a work of art? – And: What defines its quality? What strategies can we, as recipients, develop to engage with the offerings of art production? Through this exhibition series, we want to explore the "building blocks" of art to find a guide through the "labyrinth of art."
The first exhibition in this series focuses on the concept of identity. It raises questions about ourselves as we view a work of art or consider the artist who created it. What do we base our identity on? Our memory? Our consciousness? Is "identity" defined by a social construct or merely by our physical existence? Heiner Keupp speaks in this context of "identity construction - a patchwork of identities." We have invited four artists to this exhibition. The works include drawings, photographs, woodcuts, paintings, and an installation.
