About the exhibition:
Sabine Tress creates images. Her artistic process is spontaneous, charged with tension, eruptive, as deliberate as it is intuitive — just like “PengZackBumm.” Her canvases rarely depict anything recognizable. Instead, they place the act of painting itself at the center of attention. Themes include growth and transformation, layering, overlapping, complementing, and displacing. Sabine Tress obscures existing color fields to the point of unrecognizability, while others are veiled so seductively and delicately that one becomes even more curious about what lies beneath. She consistently invites the viewer to join her expeditions into the realm of painterly possibilities. It’s about weight, sensuality, and the variety of form, color, and surface. What draws the viewer's attention? Is it the massive color crusts, the strikingly meandering rivulets, or perhaps the cotton-candy-light spray can spots that remind us of their origins in street art? Is it the well-considered interplay of all these forces? Even though there is rarely anything representational or symbolic in the artist's works, Sabine Tress's pieces evoke a multitude of associations. She creates visual spaces that surprise the viewer anew with every glance, igniting the desire for the next look, the next discovery.
About the artist:
Born in 1968 in Ulm, Sabine Tress studied painting at the Ecole nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. She has maintained a studio in Cologne since 2004.
