Flow - Stefan Rohrer

The Stuttgart artist Stefan Rohrer transforms model cars just as he does real car bodies into new, dynamic objects. In his videos, which are akin to his sculptures, he assembles fragmented, reconstructed sequences connected in loops of time, exploring themes of time and space as flowing movements, just like in his three-dimensional works.

"Reality and fantasy converge in Stefan Rohrer’s works, not to reconcile opposites, but to visualize the tensions where they meet. Here, transformation processes unfold, accompanied by movement, change, and reconfiguration. Wheelbarrows or hand trucks, motorcycles, Vespas, car bodies, toys like model cars and Faller houses are detached from their familiar functional contexts, yet they still evoke their original purposes. Moreover, Stefan Rohrer endows them with surprising capabilities and allows them space for free expression, for instance, to celebrate the thrill of speed, including disasters and other exceptional states. To illustrate how speed transforms into destructive force, he captures the moment when the pace suddenly halts, thus freezing the movement... It is the presence of this all-changing moment that fascinates him, as it gives rise to something entirely new - an autonomous form."
