Winfried Becker

The gallery at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich presents an exhibition by the artist Winfried Becker from May 7, 2026, to June 21, 2026. Born in 1966 in Erlenbach am Main, Becker is known for his sculptures that do not depict animals but rather use them as a starting point for formal explorations of form, volume, and movement. In his works, the figures appear in unusual and sometimes exaggerated postures, evading any idealizing or decorative interpretation.

Becker's approach is characterized by a process-oriented engagement with materials. He disassembles, reassembles, or discards models and often incorporates found objects like driftwood into his sculptural forms. This method gives his cast works, often executed in bronze or iron, a raw, archaic presence. The origins of the materials remain visible and contribute to a unique visual language that oscillates between observation and abstraction.

The exhibition will showcase Becker's distinctive, reduced formal language, which combines craftsmanship with an openness to chance and fragmentation. His works, often infused with subtle humor, avoid pathos and kitsch, offering the viewer a quiet yet compelling visual experience.
