Duo exhibition with Johanna Jakowlev and Katja Zander @ 30works

With "MOnuMENT," artists Johanna Jakowlev and Katja Zander point to the driving elements of their visual worlds. Despite stylistic and thematic differences, they create an intersection of their works.

While the images initially amplify their contrasts, surprising parallels emerge upon closer inspection. Katja Zander depicts groups of people in urban spaces, using blurriness and diffuse color gradients as parameters of her visual aesthetic. In contrast, Johanna Jakowlev focuses on clear linear structures and a deliberate color rhythm with her solitary building fragments embedded in nature. This clarity, however, breaks down in the organic formations of sky and clouds, creating a bridge to the meandering color flows in Katja Zander's paintings. Besides the fractured color palette and a strong theatrical character, both artists share a tendency to forgo details, lending their works an enigmatic quality. Furthermore, they are marked by a sense of transience, symbolically tied to the "moment," which is reflected in both the diffuse, randomly gathered human figures and the mysterious "monuments."

Ultimately, these are mood pieces imbued with a subtle magic.
