Mr. Brainwash | We are all in this Together

Mr. Brainwash, the popular protégé of Banksy, is showcasing new works at GALERIE FRANK FLUEGEL in the autumn and winter of 2020. The artworks will be on display until the end of January 2021.

Mr. Brainwash gained fame through the film "Exit Through the Gift Shop," directed by Banksy, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary in 2011. He has since attracted notable collectors and fans, including Pope Francis and the Kardashians. He also designed the cover for Madonna's 2009 album "Celebration."

The winter exhibition will feature his major works such as Every Day Life - Follow your Dreams, Einstein, Banksy Thrower, Balloon Girl, and Charlie Chaplin. These unique pieces on paper utilize mixed media and stencil techniques, as well as works on wood and canvas. As always with Mr. Brainwash, there will be plenty of spray paint under the title "We are all in this Together."

Under this title, editions and canvas works have also been released this year, which will be showcased as well.

GALERIE FRANK FLUEGEL has represented Mr. Brainwash in the German-speaking region since 2012. In the Kitzbühel branch, works by Mr. Brainwash have been regularly exhibited during the winter months for the past three years.

Following the auction record for a Banksy painting at Sotheby's in London, street art is increasingly capturing the attention of collectors. They are often interested not only in unique pieces but also in editions, as long as they are original. Whether the art is acquired as an investment or simply for enjoyment is secondary.

Born in 1966 as Thierry Guetta in Garges-lès-Gonesse near Paris, he has lived in Los Angeles since he was 15.

In Los Angeles, the first exhibition "Life is Beautiful" took place in 2008 and quickly became a crowd-puller with over 50,000 visitors. In 2009, Madonna commissioned Mr. Brainwash to design the album cover for "Celebration," which was also available as a canvas print.

2010 marked his breakthrough: Mr. Brainwash became famous through the award-winning and Oscar-nominated documentary "Exit Through the Gift Shop," where he followed his friend and street art legend Banksy at work. This introduction into the street art scene led him to start creating artworks. He had already produced unique pieces and editions at that time. From then on, Mr. Brainwash became a phenomenon, a superstar who rapidly conquered the art world with his originals.

In February 2010, the second exhibition "Life Is Beautiful: Icons" opened in New York, covering 1,400 square meters, and sold out within a few days.

Numerous exhibitions followed in England, Germany, France, and most recently in Seoul. A longer interview has just been published in Paris Match.

With stencil graffiti, screen prints, and pop culture motifs akin to Warhol, the artist has brought urban art from the streets into the living room, merging both art movements. His surprising works like Juxtapose, F.Y.D. Everyday Life, Einstein, Kate Moss, Life is Beautiful, and Balloon Girl combine vibrant colors in various combinations with sometimes controversial themes. This is all executed in mixed media with spray paint, painting, and collage techniques, enriched with ironic references that often conceal a politically social message.
