David Shrigley – „My Artwork Is Terrible“

David Shrigley – "My Artwork Is Terrible"
Exhibition opening at Galerie Frank Flügel in Nuremberg on March 12, 2020.

Galerie Frank Flügel will open the exhibition "David Shrigley – My Artwork Is Terrible" on Thursday, March 12, 2020, at 7 PM in Nuremberg. The exhibition will feature graphics and design objects by the British artist and will run until June 27, 2020.

David Shrigley was born in 1968 in Macclesfield, GB, and studied at the Glasgow School of Art. He is primarily known for his satirical drawings with text that humorously critique the banality of everyday situations with dark humor. The majority of his work consists of drawings, sculptures, installations, and paintings. As a passionate music fan, he also frequently designs album covers.

Shrigley describes his own style as "a kind of artistic doodling, paired with not-so-pretty handwriting." Although his professors labeled him as "too funny," Shrigley has always felt that he "wants to draw this way and not otherwise." Serious art can also be funny, and the opposite of serious art is not humorless art, but rather bad art, according to Shrigley.

Shrigley lives outside of Glasgow and continues to draw cartoons for publications such as the Guardian and the New Statesman. In 2013, he was nominated for the Turner Prize. In early 2014, he was commissioned to create a sculpture for the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.

His works are included in the collections of MOMA/New York and Tate/London. The Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich dedicated his first major solo exhibition in Germany to him in 2014. In 2020, Shrigley was awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire by the Queen.

Galerie Frank Flügel has represented the artist since 2019 at its locations in Nuremberg and Kitzbühel. The artworks and graphics can, of course, also be purchased online.
