Jenseits des Eigentlichen
Reconciling holiness and sexuality might seem like a daring endeavor. This is precisely the challenge that painter Gerard Kever from the Hamburg region takes on in his new exhibition "Beyond the Essential," which will be on display at Galerie H1 from September 20, 2019, to March 6, 2020.
According to the artist's understanding, these are merely perceived opposites that once experienced a separation. Their reconnection (from the Latin re-ligio) occurs in Kever's work in an innocent and playful manner, sometimes even in a serious tone. The exhibition unfolds as an eclectic display that spans various periods of his artistic creation.
Photographer Erich Kukies writes about Gerard Kever: "He is one of those multi-talented individuals: a writer, photographer, filmmaker, and of course, a painter, although the term 'painter' hardly does him justice. It would be more accurate to characterize him, which sets him apart from other 'Expressionists,' as a painter-philosopher endowed with analytical insight."
Accompanying the exhibition are sensual sculptures and other works by ceramic artist Margit Bayer from Eltville-Rauenthal. A particular focus of her artistic work lies in the different cycles of female life.
