Alex Heil – The Shape of Water @ 30works
How does one approach a medium that has neither color nor form? Something fleeting and materially intangible? The artist Alex Heil manages to give water not only a physical presence but even a face in her hypnotic visual worlds. In virtuoso shades of white and blue, she captures the irretrievable wave movements of this fluid, condensing light effects into almost surreal reflections and showcasing authentic whirlpool and bubble formations in all their transience and ephemerality.
For the artist from Cologne, there is no implied symbolism; instead, her naturalistically influenced oil paintings promote the pure aesthetics of the moment, which is always exceptional and thus unrepeatable. She juxtaposes the sensuality of water with the stark, sometimes sterile architecture of swimming pools, manifested in tiles, metal stairs, and chrome handrails. It is precisely this contrast between the fleeting non-materiality of water and the cool, tactile geometry of pools and swimming halls that elevates the classic bathing establishment to a unique place—one that feels as real as it is ethereal.
