Stadtansichten von Stefan Becker
City Views by Stefan Becker
Exhibition featuring etchings, drawings, and acrylic works by Stefan Becker
Starting March 8, 2019, Kunsthandlung Langheinz will showcase works by Stefan Becker. In addition to numerous etchings, the exhibition will feature four acrylic paintings on canvas representing Hamburg, Mainz, Berlin, and New York, as well as watercolors and drawings. “The artist has also created a fantastic piece depicting Darmstadt, which will of course be part of the exhibition,” confirms Verena Langheinz. The artist will be present at the opening on March 8 at 7 PM. Admission is free.
The city as a holistic theme has accompanied Becker for over 30 years. How did Babylon, Jerusalem, and Athens come into being? How are myths born? What allows metropolises like Berlin or New York to evoke such a unique sense of urbanity and city identity among residents and visitors? Always in search of answers, Becker travels extensively. He processes his impressions and insights into artistic works in the form of sketches, watercolor studies, large-format acrylic paintings, and especially in technically complex etchings. The real challenge for the artist lies in capturing the characteristic features and highlights of a city and transforming them into tension-filled compositions with free graphic structures.
Not all individual elements have a factual connection. “I’m less concerned with a primarily illustrative relationship to the cities, but rather with an artistic poeticization,” explains Stefan Becker. Random inscriptions, lines scratched directly into copper with a needle, and abstract image zones invite the viewer to discover new perspectives and step off familiar paths.
Opening on March 8, 2019, at 7 PM. Admission is free.
Exhibition from March 8 to April 6, 2019
