PRESS RELEASE

Tourné
Antje Zeiher

Opening Sunday, March 18, 2018, 12 – 3 PM with an introduction at 1 PM

Exhibition duration: March 21 to April 28, 2018

The solo exhibition "Tourné" at Galerie Judith Andreae showcases vibrant, fresh paintings and works created specifically for Bonn by the Munich-based artist Antje Zeiher (*1979, Reutlingen). A master student of Jean-Marc Bustamente, she graduated in 2016 from the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and has since been recognized with the Fanny-Carlita Foundation scholarship and the Bildboard Art Prize promotion in Munich (both in 2016), as well as an artist studio grant from the City of Munich in 2017.

Antje Zeiher kicks off her 'tour' in 2018 with her first solo exhibition in Bonn, presenting a body of work that aims to reflect her own authentic world. It plays with the boundaries of the figurative and the abstract.

Her colorful, gestural acrylic paintings on canvas challenge viewers, compelling them to search, recognize, associate, and further contemplate the images.

In some works, one might actually recognize something familiar: objects, architectural elements, and bodies can be sensed, yet a complete picture remains elusive. The viewer is left with an "open ending" and only a fleeting glimpse into Antje Zeiher's world. Everything appears distorted, turned upside down, and spun around - tourné. The mood in her works fluctuates between lightness and heaviness, tipping or oscillating between the two.

While the works from 2015 are often more figurative and suggest more recognizable objects, the pieces from 2016 and 2017 reveal much larger and deeper spaces. A blend of architectural fragments, urban everyday life, and landscapes can be found.

Antje Zeiher demonstrates in these works how the built environment confronts, influences, and interacts with humanity.

In her current works from 2018, she also experiments with new materials, such as cork, which add another layer and depth. Her objects no longer represent spaces but integrate themselves within them.

She describes her own working method as a mix of precise planning and intuition. “How to keep making a thing, and figuring new ways of doing it? Invent, test and play” (Terry Winters).
