In ancient Greece and Rome, there was no word for what we today understand as family. The original meaning of the term refers to a servant or slave (Latin: famulus). In the Middle Ages, the key concept of social order was not family but rather the household, which often included hundreds or even thousands of individuals. Today, alongside the "nuclear family," there are numerous possible forms of living and relationships.

What influences do societal, economic, and media changes have on interpersonal cohesion? How do connections, links, and entanglements arise and operate? How are these maintained?

In the context of the 2017 annual theme – SYSTEMS · SYSTÈMES · SYSTEME – the group exhibition "Family Dynamics" presents various works. These approach the "family system" and showcase the individual perspectives of the exhibiting artists.
