Sign Languages showcases works by 50 artists who studied Visual Communication at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee under Nanne Meyer between 1994 and 2017. These students have ventured into various fields of drawing, with many enjoying successful careers. The range of artistic approaches and languages presented in this exhibition is vast and reflects the evolving spirit of young people in Berlin over two decades. The names of the artists also highlight how both the city and the art school have become more international and broadened their perspectives. The exhibition reveals the potential and diversity of the medium, spanning from free artistic expressions to graphic novels, comics, children's books, reports, travelogues, illustrations, subjective cartographies, and scientific drawings, culminating in drawn animations. In the Universes events #1-3, six participating artists will present their work in brief illustrated talks and discussions with Nanne Meyer and Stefan Koppelkamm.
An accompanying publication, Arbeitsheft XVII of the gallery, features numerous images, biographies of the participating artists, and contributions from Nicola von Velsen, Stefan Koppelkamm, and Christian Schiebe. 128 pages.
