Wieland Payer - Ultima Thule
We warmly invite you and your friends to the opening with the artist on Saturday, August 26, 2017, at 8 PM.
The name of the first significant master of pastel painting in our century is Wieland Payer. He has revived this nearly obsolete technique from the corners of art history and presents it to us in a new light. He achieves this through its innovative application on a large scale, a brilliant mastery and careful development of the technique, artistic virtuosity, and his sensitivity to captivating themes.
Nowhere else can one get so close to the wonders and mysteries as in Ultima Thule, the legendary farthest north of antiquity. Here Brynhildr slept, here Sigurd forgot his vow, and King Gylfi was deceived by the gods. Professor Lidenbrock descended into the volcano Snæfellsjökull to reach the center of the Earth.
The land of fire, ice, and legends provided Wieland Payer with the motifs for his current body of work. "Ultima Thule" encompasses a series of pastels and paper objects, imaginatively captured and masterfully executed.
Wieland Payer (*1981) studied at the Kunsthochschule Burg Giebichenstein Halle (Diploma, 2009), the Accademia di Belle Arti Rome (Erasmus Scholarship), and the Royal College of Art in London (Scholarship from the Studienstiftung and DAAD, Master's, 2011). Works by the young artist are included in renowned public collections.
