To celebrate the 150th birthday of the artist on July 8, 2017, Galerie Parterre Berlin is honoring Käthe Kollwitz with an exhibition and a program of events and educational activities, held close to her former residence.
The graphic artist and sculptor Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945) is still regarded as the most famous German artist, with a body of work that has a global impact. Kollwitz lived in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg from 1891 to 1943, at Weißenburger Straße 25 (now Kollwitzstraße 56). The house was destroyed by bombs in November 1943; she herself had fled to Nordhausen in August of that year to escape the bombings. The residential street and the square in front of Käthe Kollwitz's apartment building were named in her honor.
The special exhibition at this historic location—where Käthe Kollwitz was familiar with both the "Municipal Gas Works" and the "Municipal Shelter"—provides an overview of the artist's graphic work with around 70 high-quality loans from the Käthe Kollwitz Museum Cologne. Works such as the lithograph "Municipal Shelter" and the gouache "Workers Coming from the Train Station" highlight the (surprisingly rare) opportunities for direct topographical references in her art. Furthermore, the exhibition primarily showcases the outstanding artist through graphic cycles and individual pieces, with the "Weavers' Cycle," which made Kollwitz suddenly famous in 1898, serving as the starting point.
This collaborative project, developed in partnership with the Käthe Kollwitz Museum Cologne and the Academy of Arts Berlin, was conceived by Kathleen Krenzlin of Galerie Parterre Berlin and is supported by the Capital Cultural Fund.
Exhibition from July 5 to September 24, 2017
