Hypnotic, daring, and profoundly mysterious: Lena Schmidt's visual worlds exert a magical pull. The mystical, desolate landscapes created by the young artist from Hamburg remain intentionally vague, celebrating twilight as an aesthetic counterpoint to the typically light-filled genre of landscape painting. This leaves the viewer in an imaginary, timeless space that seems to have sprung from surreal dreams.

It is the abandoned industrial sites, crumbling roads that appear to lead nowhere, and old power lines and bridges that inspire Lena Schmidt. These "non-places," which symbolize both functionality and transition, are imbued by the 36-year-old with a somnambulant, dramatic aura, where clear structures are mystified by artfully created darkness.

Lena Schmidt's works are primarily created on wood, which she finds in pallet or board form at her sources of inspiration and "recycles" through her art. With a strong materiality, adorned with both delicate and bold cut engravings, her pieces oscillate between image, object, and installation.

She captures her motifs using acrylic markers and selectively vibrant glazes; this culminates in a visual power that opens the doors to a fascinating in-between world...
