Armin Mueller-Stahl
Whoever merely functions withdraws from the adventure of life. Exhibition featuring works by Armin Mueller-Stahl
Soon, Darmstadt will be enriched by a highlight of the art scene: Armin Mueller-Stahl will showcase his works at Kunsthandlung Langheinz.
His multifacetedness, creativity, and seemingly boundless energy set him apart, as he has continually reinvented himself. Born in 1930 in Tilsit, East Prussia, he gained international fame as an actor, and has also worked as a screenwriter, trained concert violinist, author, painter, and graphic artist. A life full of movement, marked by a career in the GDR accompanied by numerous art and national awards, a late emigration to the West, the recipient of the Grand Cross of Merit with Star of the Federal Republic of Germany and the State Order of Merit of NRW, along with a Bambi, a Golden Bear, numerous Oscar nominations, and just as many international film awards, defines Armin Mueller-Stahl. Whatever he undertakes becomes a success, and this holds true for his artworks as well. The range of artistic techniques employed by Armin Mueller-Stahl is broad. In addition to drawings and canvas works, the artist utilizes lithography, etching, various mixed techniques, screen printing, and modern digital printing methods.
In short, the exhibition will present portraits of people. Visitors can expect to see fictional, unknown, and well-known contemporaries, including celebrities like musician John Lennon. About him, Mueller-Stahl created a portfolio of four color screen print variants in collaboration with the renowned screen printer Gundolf Roy from Zülpich. It serves as a tribute to both the great musician and American Pop Art. Mueller-Stahl's color lithograph of Woody Allen transports the viewer directly into the inner world of the American comedian. They say the eyes are the window to the soul. The portrayed subject looks skeptically, appearing internally torn, with his glasses slightly askew. Screen prints like “On an Autumn Morning in Berlin” tell the story of a long night and what follows, as a cool autumn morning dawns at the Brandenburg Gate. The color etching “The Blue Cow” references a piece that Armin Mueller-Stahl wrote about a headstrong cow half a century ago.
For the opening, the artist will already be back in his second home. “Armin Mueller-Stahl will personally sign the exhibition poster before he departs for America again,” promises Stephan Langheinz from Kunsthandlung Langheinz. 40 graphics, ten unique prints, and ten one-of-a-kind pieces on paper will be on display.
