Building Bridges @ 30works
In loud times, it is often the quiet symbols that urge us to reflect and contemplate. Thus, it is no coincidence that Thomas Baumgärtel makes bridges the central motif in his new series "Building Bridges." "The bridge is an allegory for overcoming obstacles. That’s why it is more urgent than ever to build bridges—both real and symbolic," says Thomas Baumgärtel. This concern is reflected in his powerful, at times elegiac portrayals of famous monuments such as the Hohenzollern Bridge, the Berlin Bridge, and the Brooklyn Bridge. With their blurred aesthetics, flanked by soft focus that deepens into the background, Baumgärtel creates somnambulant architectural allegories that oscillate between Romanticism, Impressionism, and Photorealism. He incorporates elements of décollage, painting, and stencil art, condensing them into a harmonious overall composition. "Building Bridges" marks a highlight in Thomas Baumgärtel's work with 20 new, studio-fresh pieces, proving once again that his works are relevant on every conceivable level and will remain so.
The opening speech at the vernissage will be given by Cologne's Cultural Affairs Director, Susanne Laugwitz-Aulbach.
