Ulrike Theusner und Jazz-Minh Moore: The Promised Land - Zwei Werkgruppen - Zwei Ausstellungen

The artist and painter Ulrike Theusner often showcases her exceptional artistic and technical abilities so effortlessly that one tends to admire primarily her magnificent representations of complex societal themes.

Her latest series, “The Gasping Society” (currently at the Angermuseum) and “The Promised Land” (opening January 7 at our Erfurt gallery), explore the loss of values, the transformation of justice into self-righteousness, and the sense of dislocation experienced by individuals within a complex system.

At the same time, they flaunt a legendary artistic passion, drawing brilliance, stylistic historical references, and a fireworks display of visual ideas.

An authenticity emerges that lends credibility to these modern Cassandra-like warnings, transcending the curse of Apollo...

Stylistically different yet kindred in spirit are the works of Jazz-Minh Moore. Her variation on the theme “The Promised Land” begins with a juxtaposition of an abandoned American diner and the billion-dollar Amazon headquarters “Biosphere,” currently under construction in Seattle. The post-war America gives way to an Eldorado of exotic high-tech options. Many are left behind. This is not new, but it became a topic during the recent elections.

A few days after the elections, the artist suddenly recalled Eugene Delacroix’s historical masterpiece “Liberty Leading the People.” She created several multi-figure scenarios based on the famous composition.

Another sequence includes a series of small portraits of close friends, referencing the complexity of the life circumstances of the artist's generation.

‘And The Band Played On’ bids farewell to the heavy theme. "I believe in the artist's duty to carry clarity, truthfulness, and brilliance in difficult times." (Jazz-Minh Moore)

Ulrike and Jazz-Minh met in 2010 at a dinner party at Villae, NYC. That same year, they founded the GutBox art collective and held their first exhibition at the ‘Y Gallery’ in New York. This was followed by two more exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles, as well as a permanent installation at the Magoski Art Colony.

In the GutBox art collective, the artists created collaborative works. "The Promised Land" is their first exhibition as individual artists.

We warmly invite you and your friends to the opening with the artist on Saturday, January 7, 2017, at 8 PM!

Prof. Dr. Kai Uwe Schierz will speak.
