One-Single-Artwork-Show #4: Susanne Jung
The Artwork:
Susanne Jung | Mogao 21, 2015, 200 x 220 cm Ink, oil on cotton
Stripes—whether horizontal or vertical—are arranged in subtle color sequences that overlap and shift, constantly altering the parameters of perception. Seemingly fixed color fields open up on both sides—underlying depth meets surface brightness and vice versa, horizontal and vertical lines intersect, expansion and extension intertwine. Are these images transparent or translucent, should the gaze be directed inward or outward? The field of vision is a vibrating structure of distinct values and worths.
Next to them are seemingly monochromatic color fields that blur into one another. Glazes layer over each other, concealing and revealing what they hide. They shine with a matte luster, illuminating the surface, where they drift like colored veils. (Karin Stempel) The work "Mogao 21" is inspired by the Buddhist cave paintings in Northwest China and was featured in the artist's solo exhibition this year at the Museum for Contemporary Art in Urümqi.
