Back to the roots. Art discussion. Let’s talk about art.

One-single-artwork-show #1: John Cornu The Artwork:
John Cornu: Untitled (Verticales), 2012
Wood, paint, and wax, 240 x 269 x 29 cm Photo: © John Cornu, Courtesy of the artist

John Cornu's artwork consists of a collection of ten vertical poles made of polished and blackened wood, arranged at regular intervals against the wall to create a defined space.

Cornu's work is rooted in an aesthetic derived from Minimalism and Modernism (monochrome, serial, modular), which has a strong connection to context (historical, architectural, social) and leans towards a form of contemporary Romanticism (Vanitas, blindness, violence, and destruction).

With an interest in modern ruins, structures of power and logic, and transience, the artist's works convey a poetic and uncompromising atmosphere. Whether sculptural, drawn, or installation-based, the works blend paradoxical forces to allow for a variety of interpretations and readings.

The French artist John Cornu, born in 1976, lives and works in Rennes and Paris. His works have been exhibited in numerous art institutions and galleries: Palais de Tokyo, Paris (F), Cneai, Paris (F), Musèe des Beaux-arts, Calais (F), Musée des Beaux-arts, Rennes (F), Musée Particulière, Brussels (BE), Musée Picasso, Paris (F), Biennale de Lyon (F), Sainsbury Center for Visual Arts, Norwich (UK), Circa, Montréal (CAN), ZQM, Berlin (D), Busan Biennale (KR), Biennale d'art contemporain de Jukoutsk (RUS), Ricou Gallery, Brussels (BE), Galerie Thaddeus Ropac, Paris (F), Galerie Anne de Villepoix, Paris (F), Galerie Gilla Lörcher, Berlin (D), among others.
