Voyage autour de ma chambre

Voyage autour de ma chambre, the title of the exhibition by Ani Schulze and George Rippon, draws inspiration from a novel by Xavier de Maistre and brings together the perspectives of both artists for the first time. De Maistre wrote the novel during a 42-day house arrest in Turin following an unauthorized duel. He served this sentence from his armchair, dressing in travel attire each morning to embark on a journey of discovery—entirely within his room. He observed everyday objects, the pictures on the walls, his bed, the books, the desk, as well as his servant and his dog.

Dreams from Transit.

The works present an individual, fantastical adaptation of de Maistre's room, which he was not allowed to leave during those 42 days.

In the installation, Ani Schulze and George Rippon combine reminiscences of sculptures and prints that evoke vases, cushions, closed doors, and sheer curtains. All the pieces feature distorted body fragments that play with themes of closed passages, transparency, movement, stillness, materiality, and immateriality, creating a virtual journey imbued with a post-human atmosphere—quirky and capricious.
