Hans-Christian Schink - Rom
After a year at the Villa Massimo in Rome, Hans-Christian Schink returned to Germany with two new series - "Aqua Claudia" and "E.U.R."
The Aqua Claudia was an ancient aqueduct that supplied water to the Roman capital, stretching approximately 69 kilometers from its source to the city center. The remaining fragments run through the southeastern neighborhoods from the present-day Parco degli Aquedotti to the Porta Maggiore. Hans-Christian Schink follows the aqueduct through the urban landscape, providing a cross-section of the city's historical development.
Esposizione Universale di Roma (E.U.R., as the Romans call the district) is the name of a neighborhood established in the south of Rome starting in 1938. Hans-Christian Schink approaches the phenomenon of E.U.R. in a completely new way. He resists (almost) the visual allure of the monumental axes, grand central perspectives, and strict play of light and shadow. He steps away from the vanishing points by a few meters, views sculptures from their backs, and directs attention to the mundane. With this democratic perspective, he disrupts the intended power gesture of the place, shifting its atmosphere into the surreal through the absence of people and vehicles.
Hans-Christian Schink, born in 1961 in Erfurt, lives and works in Berlin. His work is exhibited and published internationally and is included in important private and public collections. In 2013, he was awarded the LEAD Award in Gold.
We warmly invite you and your friends to the opening with the artist on Saturday, October 22 at 9 PM.
