WOLFGANG LEBER Malerei. Zeichnung. Skulptur.

Exhibition opening at Galerie Parterre Berlin on Tuesday, September 27, 2016, at 8 PM, with Dr. Fritz Jacobi.

Born in Berlin, Wolfgang Leber has been envisioning urban spaces for over 50 years, occupying a unique position in East Berlin painting. Alongside architectural events, shifted perspectives, overlaps, and light reflections, he is also inspired by the human presence in space, describing it as a "nameless apparition on a labyrinthine stage" (W.L.).

Art historian Roland März interprets Leber's turned profiles and figures from behind as a "metaphor for unattainability." Indeed, Leber's paintings are not about specific individuals or topographies; rather, they offer a reading of the city and life within it, focusing on the journey from motif to image. The color has liberated itself from object reference, and Leber's works increasingly resemble painted collages that create new spaces and realities on the canvas. The intertwining of inside and outside, before and behind, near and far, figure and space is one of the key characteristics of his painting.

Wolfgang Leber was born in Berlin in 1936. He studied from 1957 to 1961 at the Werkkunstschule and the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin-Charlottenburg but had to interrupt his studies due to the construction of the Berlin Wall. In 1970, he founded the "Werkstudio Grafik" in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, where he served as director until its closure in 1995. Since 1964, Wolfgang Leber has been working as a freelance artist in Berlin. He has held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in exhibitions in national and international galleries and museums, with his works featured at art fairs both domestically and abroad.

With this exhibition for Wolfgang Leber, Galerie Parterre Berlin continues its series honoring the significant Berlin painter circle, which is also based in the large district of Pankow.

Exhibition from September 28, 2016, to November 20, 2016.

A publication, Arbeitsheft XIII Galerie Parterre Berlin, will accompany the exhibition, featuring contributions from Fritz Jacobi, Anita Kühnel, and Karl Heinz Zillman, as well as a conversation between Barbara Schervier-Legewie, Heiner Legewie, and Wolfgang Leber.
