Francisco Rozas - Pretending

Gallery Weekend Berlin 2016: Galerie Gilla Lörcher presents installation by Rita McBride student FRANCISCO ROZAS

Born in 1980 in Chile, artist Francisco Rozas has been exploring the construction of large, fragile geometric objects since 2013, oscillating between flatness and three-dimensionality. These objects do not embody vague models of individual form experiments; rather, they serve as exemplary visualizations of mathematical dependencies. Initially, viewers may perceive the material of the sculptures as stone or matte-painted wood, only to realize upon closer inspection that they have been deceived. The sculptures, which appear mysterious and solid, are in fact precisely crafted structures made of cardboard.

For Francisco Rozas, who studied with Professor Rita McBride at the University of Düsseldorf, this marks his second solo exhibition at Galerie Gilla Lörcher | Contemporary Art. In 2014, he presented the installation "In planning" here, where he examined the process of design planning as well as the gallery space as a permanent site of construction.

In the exhibition "Pretending," which Galerie Gilla Lörcher is presenting for Gallery Weekend Berlin 2016, Francisco Rozas showcases a variety of his objects, each standing just over 2 meters tall, and positions them like models on a runway—spanning across the gallery space.
