Rodion Petroff - Light Perception

You are cordially invited to the opening with the artist on Friday, March 4th at 7 PM.

Rodion Petroff's paintings initially appear photorealistic. Upon closer inspection, a unique visual reality emerges that references the analytical psychology of Carl Gustav Jung, particularly his theory of archetypes. One of Jung's most significant archetypes is the Anima, the inner personality, the "feminine side," the soul within the psyche. In literature, the Anima is exemplified by Helena in Goethe's Faust.

In Petroff's works, she consistently bears the same facial features, yet these are overlaid by "archetypal projections," "interferences," and "formations." Details of the face elude the viewer, while others are pulled from the darkness by striking patterns of light. These light phenomena evoke light shows in nightclubs, mystifying those present, accompanying collective behavioral patterns (the dance), and dissolving the separation between persona (mask) and shadow (the dark side).

Rodion Petroff was born in 1985 in Klaipeda. He studied at the Academy of Arts in Vilnius and currently lives in Lithuania.
