"Hot Walls & Cool Water" Fototkunst von Roger Fritz
The Munich-based artist Roger Fritz reflects on a long, diverse, and successful career as a photographer, director, producer, author, and actor.
His success began with the Photokina Awards in 1954 and 1956.
In the 1970s, he collaborated on a variety of films with directors such as Luchino Visconti, Gian Carlo Menotti, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. As an actor, he worked alongside James Coburn, Maximilian Schell, Romy Schneider, and Helga Anders, among others. In 1961, Roger Fritz received the Federal Film Award for his film "Zimmer im Grünen." Additionally, actors Helga Anders and Klaus Löwitsch were awarded the Federal Film Award for their performances in films directed by him. As a television director, he has also collaborated with many well-known German actors.
As a photographer, Roger Fritz works both documentarily and in an artistically abstract manner, exhibiting his works internationally. In the exhibition "Hot Walls & Cool Water," he presents his unique perspective on the city of New York and his water images, characterized by abstract and poetically vibrant impressions.
Roger Fritz describes his work as follows:
“Water is the most important molecule on Earth. Life comes from water and — as one can see with the debris — it also returns there. To represent this transparent substance, light and reflections, as well as recognizability, are needed. These thoughts gave rise to my water images. The Photokina Award in 1956 was won, among other works, with two water images, taken on the water at that time. In contrast are my photos of people, as seen in my books 'Extrem Bayerisch' or 'Muc People.'
My other aim is to depict reality and bring it closer to those who often stroll past it.”
