Philippe Huart - Ceremony / Sacrifice

For the first time, works by the French artist Philippe Huart are on display in Germany. His solo exhibition Ceremony / Sacrifice at Galerie Egbert Baqué Contemporary features both paintings and drawings.

In his paintings, Philippe Huart skillfully employs the vibrant, glossy aesthetics of Pop Art, which he mastered during his time as a designer of album covers for artists like Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin. However, the subjects he depicts stand in stark contrast to the polished, harmless world of advertising: pills and surgical instruments, barbed wire, revolvers, gas masks, and torture hoods dominate these images. The cheerful, colorful appearance seems to sweeten the menacing and brutal elements with a wink.

In stark contrast, when Philippe Huart works as a draftsman, his brilliant graphite drawings focus intensely on the human figure, enriched with a multitude of fine shades of gray and subtle nuances in black and white. They forgo any contextualization and could not be more relevant. The solitary Homo sapiens, exposed to excruciating brutality or immersed in spiritual and erotic devotion—Philippe Huart's art brings together suffering and ecstasy, the extremes of human interaction, in close proximity. His paintings and drawings challenge the viewer not only to look at the surface of an image but to take a second, deeper glance. Philippe Huart clearly does not shy away from crossing boundaries or breaking conventions.

It was high time to present this exceptional artist, who has exhibited in numerous European countries, the USA, Latin America, and in Asian metropolises like Hong Kong and Seoul, here in Germany.
