An exhibition featuring students from HBK Braunschweig, curated by Simone van Dijken, a lecturer at HBK Braunschweig as part of the Dorothea-Erxleben Scholarship 2013-2015

Language is the representation of content through symbols. However, to create relevant symbols anew, one must imitate the familiar while simultaneously questioning it – as if stepping into the skin of another person.

Simone van Dijken's work is characterized by the reduction of artistic vocabulary to its primordial function – inspired on one hand by the physical approach to painting and drawing (where bodily movement determines the visible) and on the other hand by the improvised use of voice and sound, which fundamentally creates a new vocabulary.

In this exhibition, new content is generated through the imitation of the familiar and presented in a variety of media. Art students (from the classes of Raimund Kummer, Corinna Schnitt, and Thomas Rentmeister at the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst Braunschweig) have engaged intensively with the theme alongside Simone van Dijken, in a highly individual act of stepping into the skin of another.
