Hans-Christian Schink - EUR

After a year at the Villa Massimo in Rome, Hans-Christian Schink returned to Germany with two fantastic new series in tow. The first series, titled EUR, will be presented starting May 9.

Esposizione Universale di Roma is the name of a new district built in the south of Rome starting in 1938, commonly referred to by its abbreviation EUR. Mussolini envisioned EUR as the site for the World Expo in 1942, under the theme of an Olimpiade della Civiltà (Olympiad of Cultures).

Italy's entry into the war and the fall of the fascist government in 1943 brought the project and construction activities to a halt. After 1951, the area was completed with altered urban planning objectives. Thus, along the main axis leading to the 1960 Olympics, the Palazzo dello Sport, now known as PalaLottomatica, was built by Pier Luigi Nervi and Piacentini, while the Grattacielo Italia now stands on the foundations of the grand theater at Piazza Imperiale.

By 1955, EUR was connected to the metro line to Termini and evolved into an administrative center and an upscale residential area.
