COLOGNE - Thomas Baumgärtel @ 30works
His spray banana can be found all over the world. Yet, the artistic home of Thomas Baumgärtel has always been and will always be Cologne. 30works presents in the "COLOGNE" exhibition recent works by the exceptional artist that pay tribute to the cathedral city, while also offering some critique...
He became world-famous as the Bananensprayer, but was also somewhat misunderstood. The label of the provocative sprayer clung so heavily to Thomas Baumgärtel that it was easy to overlook the vast artistic range he possesses. His interdisciplinary work includes drawings, prints, murals, collages, and object art. Categorically, Baumgärtel is a pioneer of street art, a performance artist, a painter, and an installation artist; implicitly, however, he is primarily one thing: an unwavering fighter for the freedom of art.
Baumgärtel is aware of the impact of his works. In addition to his training as a freelance artist at the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne, he also holds a diploma in psychology. Thus, he explores the effects of art with his scientific expertise and skillfully implements these insights. The starting point and artistic home of Thomas Baumgärtel has always been and will always be Cologne. The city serves as both a microcosm and macrocosm of his work, deeply loved yet critically observed, abstractly addressed or thematically immortalized. The "COLOGNE" exhibition features, among other things, photorealistic acrylic paintings of the cathedral and the Nippes Clouth works, as well as a poetically appealing view of the Ehrenfeld Helios site.
The opening speech will be given by Christoph Kuckelkorn, head of the Cologne Rose Monday parade, in the presence of the artist. The laudation will be delivered by the publicist and Cologne Literature Prize winner Dr. Martin Stankowski.
