Dana Widawski - Blaupause

PRESS RELEASE
Berlin, October 16, 2014
Fayence Tableaus: Dana Widawski at Galerie Gilla Lörcher

Galerie Gilla Lörcher is pleased to present the new works of artist DANA WIDAWSKI in a solo exhibition. For the exhibition "Blaupause," the Berlin-based artist has created several Fayence tableaus in 2014, produced using traditional craftsmanship techniques. The choice of classic blue, reminiscent of high-quality Delft and Portuguese tile panels from past centuries, is entirely intentional. Each scene is intricately hand-painted underglaze and fired onto ceramic tiles: in DANA WIDAWSKI's work, craftsmanship and thematic choices create an intriguing juxtaposition. For instance, in the diptych "Garten Eden," composed of 24 tiles, we see a modern-looking couple, armed with an axe and chainsaw, seemingly on the verge of chopping down the Tree of Knowledge. The nine-part series "Artist’s Rest" depicts a woman lost in her absurd daydreams within tiled spaces. "Blaupause" follows the exhibition "Arts & Morris" in 2012, where the artist engaged with the craft tradition of stencil printing and paraphrased ornaments by William Morris, marking her second solo show at Galerie Gilla Lörcher.
