JOHN CORNU & IVAN LIOVIK EBEL - Hier und da
JOHN CORNU / IVAN LIOVIK EBEL
For the autumn exhibition season of 2014 at Galerie Gilla Lörcher, the artist Ivan Liovik Ebel invited his colleague John Cornu, who lives in France, to collaboratively develop an exhibition concept. Through close dialogue between the two artists, the idea for "Here and There" emerged, questioning the notion of the artistic duo. “Individual works and series, created based on repeated gestures and regulating principles, challenge the idea of the original and the copy, temporality, transformation, chronology, and the relationships between time and space in the process of creating an image,” explains Ivan Liovik Ebel.
“Interspaces” is perhaps the term that best encapsulates Ivan Liovik Ebel's work. For him, the concept of interspaces involves grappling with the relativity of perception, forms of indistinguishability, and the relationship between time and space. It is always about attempting to stage a state beyond strict oppositions—such as the visible and the invisible, the past and the future—eliminating or capturing transitions between them.
John Cornu fundamentally works “in situ,” adapting his practice and formal language to the available space. His minimalist works aim to deceive us. Cornu pursues “the contours of a manipulated reality, where what is presented for our observation never corresponds to what we think we are observing” (Christian Alandete).
The French artist John Cornu, born in 1976, lives and works between Rennes and Paris. His works have been exhibited in numerous art institutions and galleries: Palais de Tokyo, Paris (F), Cneai, Paris (F), Musèe des Beaux-arts, Calais (F), Musée des Beaux-arts, Rennes (F), Biennale de Lyon (F), Circa, Montréal (CAN), ZQM, Berlin (D), Busan Biennale (KR), Biennale d'art contemporain de Jukoutsk (RUS), Ricou Gallery, Bruxelles (BE), Galerie Anne de Villepoix, Paris (F), among others.
The Swiss artist Ivan Liovik Ebel, born in 1983, lives and works in Berlin. He completed his Master's in Contemporary Arts Practice at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern. His works have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions: Kunsthaus Langenthal (CH), Kunsthalle Bern (CH), Neue Galerie, London (GB) and Bern (CH), Marks Blond Project, Bern (CH), Galerie Widmer Theodoridis, Zürich (CH), Galerie Gilla Lörcher I Contemporary Art, Berlin (D), among others.
