The Egmont-Schaefer Prize for Drawing honors not only the namesake but also the artistic work of the respective award winner and the drawing as a form of artistic expression. A prize for drawing has not existed in Berlin until now, despite the presence of notable predecessors such as Emil Orlik, Heinrich Zille, Albert Schäfer-Ast, Käthe Kollwitz, Werner Gilles, Werner Heldt, and Herbert Tucholski. Egmont Schaefer's early role model, Alfred Kubin, also worked in Berlin. The prize continues this drawing tradition and has contributed for over 15 years to establishing a significant place for drawing in the public consciousness of the city.
The following is determined for the awarding of the Egmont-Schaefer Prize for Drawing:
- The Egmont-Schaefer Prize is awarded every two years.
- The award winner is determined by an independent advisory board composed of recognized art scholars and artists, which is newly appointed for each award. The chairman of the Verein Berliner Kabinett is a regular member.
- Applications for the prize are not possible.
- The prize is endowed with at least €1,000.
- The award ceremony is accompanied by an exhibition of the award winner.
- A publication will be released in collaboration with the award winner for the exhibition.
- The award ceremony and exhibition take place in May, in conjunction with Egmont Schaefer's birthday.
