Oskar Schmidt - Darkness appears in many ways

Oskar Schmidt »Darkness appears in many ways«

To photograph, in its literal sense, means nothing more than to draw with light. However, where light is absent and complete darkness prevails, a camera can hardly achieve anything, and the art of the photographer must come to an end. In this sense, Oskar Schmidt's new works are an extensive exploration along the edges of the visible. As if one has suddenly stepped from the bright light of a sunny day into a dark house, the viewer must first acclimate to how little can be seen here. Yet, once one has adjusted to the prevailing minimalism in every respect, one can discover just how much there is to see. Prof. Dr. Steffen Siegel.

Oskar Schmidt (*1977) studied at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle and at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig. He currently lives and works in Berlin. His works were recently exhibited at the Zabludowicz Collection London (2010) and the Art Collection of Deutsche Börse (2010). Additionally, the Goethe-Institut in Washington D.C. will dedicate a solo exhibition titled "Wiedergängerinnen" to him, which was previously shown last year in the "Talents" series at C/O Berlin.

ARTIST TALK: SHADOWS SHADING, THURSDAY, JULY 8, 2010, 7:30 PM: Oskar Schmidt will speak with Prof. Dr. Steffen Siegel from Friedrich Schiller University Jena about the current exhibition and his artistic concept of photographic revenants, which revitalizes semi-familiar signs from portraits and interiors of painting.
