Jan Schmoranzer photographs filamentous structures using a fluorescence microscope, capturing one of the numerous cellular substructures at the nanoscale. Following a complex staining process for the cellular structures, the creation of the image becomes a quest among thousands of possibilities for the individual 'cell portrait.'
Bernhard Vierling draws individuals using a simple agreed-upon rule system with pencil on paper. Through an intuitive and chaotic process, a felt likeness emerges, a relational image, with clumps, knots, and delicate line work representing the nuances of a relationship, as a representation of something visible.
The juxtaposition of the microscopic cell portraits and the pencil drawings forms the core of the exhibition 'Natural Convergence.' Despite their opposing backgrounds and differing perception strategies, the works of cell biologist Jan Schmoranzer and artist Bernhard Vierling reveal surprising visual parallels.
